Paddy Freeform – The Sounds of the Universe...

As a DJ, producer, radio presenter and label boss of Universal Vibes, the next few months look an exciting prospect for Paddy Freeform with several new projects in the pipeline all based around his passion for only the very best in deep house. Don't just take our word for it, however, as both DJ and iDJ magazines have shown their support recently and given the Universal Vibes compilation, 'This Is What The Universe Sounds Like', superb reviews. DJ have made it 'Compilation of the Month' with five stars in their May issue, while iDJ awarded it 9 out of 10.

After picking up the DJ bug while working in a record shop in the early 90s, Paddy went on to forge a career taking in several high profile residencies and playing at just about every party in North East England, as well as promoting several events of his own. He also played alongside the likes of Carl Craig, Zed Bias, Bugz In The Attic, Gilles Peterson, 4hero and many more. A move to London soon followed where Paddy set up Universal Vibes. Originally conceived as an internet radio station five years ago, the website has gone on to attract around 50,000 hits per month and includes a wide selection of guest mixes and editorial content. Labels like Buzzin' Fly, Compost and Freerange have all been involved, while Paddy himself provides the 'Shakedown Sessions' dropping deep house for the dancefloor and the 'Freestyle Blend' featuring an eclectic mix of soulful grooves and deep house, hip hop, broken beat, disco and Balearic flavours.

In the summer of 2007 Universal Vibes expanded to become a record label and has released singles from Tim Scott, Jafar & Bobby Strobe, Poussez, The Onaz and OK_Ma among others. The label has received plenty of club and radio support, and is now reached its eleventh and twelfth releases by Young David and Keep the Secrets with the 'FuJi' and 'Nightlife' EPs respectively. The latter also features two remixes from Paddy under his Soulsonics name that take the jazzy vibe of the originals and turn them into dancefloor bombs.

His DJ schedule has been no less hectic playing at many of the capital's best clubs over the last twelve months including The End, Egg, Turnmills and East Village, as well as regular sets at venues like The Light, Dex, Zigfrid and the Lockside Lounge. Last year also saw Paddy play in Athens and Dubai, and impact an on the festival scene with sets at the Isle of Wight, Bloom, Secret Garden Party, V Festival, the Electric Elephant and Garden Festival in Croatia, and Lake of Stars in Malawi.

His skills and versatility as a DJ have gained Paddy much attention and he's equally at home playing underground, tech-edged house as he is playing more downtempo sets taking in everything from soulful house and broken beat to hip hop and dubstep. Last year saw him join the Éclair Pro Team demonstrating the techniques and creative possibilities of their DJ equipment including live sets performed with Ableton Live. Paddy also works as a tutor with the Subbass DJ Academy teaching production courses.

With so much going on, it's hardly surprising that Universal Vibes came to the attention of DJ magazine last year and most recently iDJ where it received the accolade of 'Label of the Month' in the April issue and a full page feature. The guys at We Love have been pretty impressed too and included a laidback summer mix from Paddy on their website. There’s a real buzz building around Universal Vibes, in fact, and summer festival appearances for Paddy are already confirmed for the Garden Festival, Secret Garden Party, Free Rotation, V Festival and Bestival, while recent London dates have included Eastern Electrics and a new bi-monthly residency with Always Fridays at Egg.

On the label front, Universal Vibes have recently released the 'This Is What The Universe Sounds Like: Part 1' compilation mixed by Paddy himself. There will also be two 12-inch vinyl samplers featuring Soulsonics remixes of the label's back catalogue and support has already come from a wide range of DJs including Gilles Peterson, Xfm's Nick Luscombe, Dubfire and Nacho Marco. Paddy's debut Soulsonics EP is also forthcoming on Universal Vibes, while Paddy is currently collaborating in the studio with Matt Masters from Freerange Records.

Raxon has opened up for huge parties in Trilogy such as Global Underground and Renaissance and has done warm ups for big DJs like Jody Wisternoff form Way Out West, Ashley Cassely from The Remote, Spiritcatcher, Matt Tolfrey and many more. He also had many appearances on Audiotonic Live at Radio 1, The PerfectMix FM and Beattunes online radio. Another highlight in his career was getting three residencies in Dubai's hottest venues; 360, Club Submarine and NEO Club. He is now currently working on production, but his frequent posts of his sets online and charts on Beatport, earned him people’s ears and got his name and sound to be heard and respected between other DJs.

Biog

Growing up in the Uk positioned between the 3 big cities of Leeds, Sheffield, and Nottingham Steve grew tired of always having to travel to get his fix of quality house music on a weekly basis, yet there was little on offer on his doorstep. After scraping together enough money to buy some turntables Steve and his friends (a collection of promising musicians, bedroom dj’s and budding young promoters) originally started promoting and djing at free outdoor events in and around his home city. Steve was not looking for money as a reward, just wanting to have a quality party of his own in his home town. At the time, a name for the night could not be agreed so they named it after the style of music they would play. Funky, grooving, tech house music. Funktec was born. From free parties to house parties to boat parties, regular gigs at most of the better bars in and around his home city followed. The music and their name was spreading and this led to longstanding residencies at arguably two of the best nights to grace the UK in recent years, Reach @ Ponana and Choobe @ The Cell. The latter was hailed by Mixmag magazine as one of the top 3 nights in the country at the time and featuring dj‘s such as Mark Knight, Cagedbaby, Pete Gooding and Inland Knights to name a few. Steve stayed on as resident for these two nights for a total of 6 years before moving to Dubai in January 2008.

Upon moving to Dubai Steve teamed up with Kazeen Events & DJ Agency after Adrian Galea (co-founder) heard his mixes posted online and asked him to get involved with them. Kazeen have staged numerous highly successful events and regular club nights in Dubai over the past 5 years, most prominently the immense Halloween party 'All Hallows 3' at Dubai World Trade Centre, where Steve played the main slot of the night to over 700 tech house loving revellers.

Steve, along with co-promoter James Hastings, has now turned his attention to promoting and djing at a new night that they have started in Dubai called Subst@nce. The premise of the night is to deliver uncomprimised music by quality home grown/local DJ's to a musically educated and up for it crowd in a non-pretentious environment, something that Steve feels is currently lacking in Dubai. After putting on two successful recent events Steve and Subst@nce are now looking to capitalise on the enthusiasm surrounding the night and push the night and the sound to the next level.

Arjun Vagale is undoubtedly the most hardworking and prolific DJ in the Indian EDM scene. Having spent over a decade in an ongoing love affair with house music, he tirelessly promotes the genre in all ways possible, shuffling between a hectic DJ schedule, a super-successful live act, long studio sessions, running a promising record label, and moonlighting as a promoter.

His youthful aspirations to hit the big-time DJ circuit were kick-started by winning the 1999 DMC World DJ Championship, leading to a series of residencies in the best clubs across India. In a testament to his prominence in the scene, Arjun was appointed A&R/DJ Bookings Manager at the (now defunct) Ministry of Sound in New Delhi, where he brought down a number of premier international DJs. His instinct for knowing what’s hottest in the international music world can be heard on his radio shows, Deep Fried Jalebee on Frisky Radio and Maktub Music on Proton Radio.

With a back-to-back gig calendar, Arjun has racked up air-miles between France, Germany, Holland, Dubai, Korea, Indonesia, Singapore, and every corner of India. He’s played alongside such heavyweights as Dave Seaman, Kasey Taylor, Judge Jules, Moshic, Brandon Block and Dousk. Clubs still resonate after his relentless techno sets!
In 2004, Arjun partnered with two close friends to form what would rapidly and unexpectedly become India’s hottest live act – Jalebee Cartel. With its genre-bending sets the band has generated the biggest buzz ever, being featured in MixMag, Rolling Stone, and Elle Magazine’s list of 100 Rising Stars. With a string of releases on labels like Baroque, Vapour, Mashtronic, Proton, System, and Platipus, Jalebee Cartel jumped right into the international arena, garnering support from the likes of Hernan Cattaneo, Moshic, Desyn Masiello, and even Tiesto. They have remixed artists like Neil Quigley, Avilo, Cbass & Mikobene, and Matt Rowan. The collective is probably the first Indian act to reach the Balance Record Pool Charts and DJ Magazine’s Hype Charts; their remix of Fitalic’s “No Way Out” was shortlisted for Nick Warren’s Global Underground Paris. 2009 saw the release of Jalebee’s critically-acclaimed debut album, ONEPOINTNOTHING, that’s getting heavy support by the likes of James Zabiela,.

Never one to play Top 10 tunes, Arjun’s always scouring for fresh underground tracks – the man never sleeps! This search lead naturally to his latest venture, founding and managing a young record label, Mak.Tub Music, with partner Logistic Soundz. The imprint already has an impressive roster of artists including Kosmas Epsilon, (Mashtronic) Bradler & Dualton, Ben Brown, Alter Breed, Chris Nemmo, George Delkos, and Alex Dolby, and has hit the coveted Beatport Top 100.

There’s good reason that Arjun Vagale’s name has become synonymous with high quality in the Indian EDM culture. Whether packing in the dance floor or producing yet another monster tune, Arjun’s absolute dedication to house music is apparent in everything he does.

KENNY HAWKES (Rekids/Arcobaleno (Brighton, UK))

DJ/Producer Kenny Hawkes has been a pioneering influence on the British dance scene for 20 years. As a kid growing up in Brighton, Kenny soaked up the sounds of Motown, Ska, Hip Hop, Dub Reggae. As soon as he hit 18 he disappeared off to Southern Europe, where he spent endless hours developing his DJ skills by playing at some of Europe's most notorious after hours clubs.
He returned home in the early 90s, skint and unknown, and stumbled across a Pirate Radio Station called ‘Girls FM’. It wasn't long before Kenny moved to London and joined the station - and in no time ‘Girls FM’ was attracting up to a million listeners a month with him as the station manager steering its musical direction.
Due to Kenny's natural grasp of quality music, ‘Girls FM’ became the most legendary underground dance music station that London had ever heard. It soon boasted 22 DJs, one of whom was Luke Solomon (of current 'Freaks' fame) who soon became Kenny's friend and fellow resident at London's longest running mid-week house club, ‘Space’ at Bar Rumba, which they ran together for 7 years. Kenny and Luke prided themselves on bringing the world’s greatest spinners to Space, including Harvey, Stacey Pullen, Tom Middleton, DJ Heather, Fransois Kevorkian, DJ Sneak, Pete Heller, Mark Farina, Cajmere and Derrick Carter - where they would play for a pint, a packet of crisps and their cab fare home.
Nowadays Kenny is busy DJing across the globe, from Belgium, New York, Portugal, Paris, Australia, Chicago and Spain to San Francisco, and Southern Asia, holding down residencies at the legendary ‘Centro Fly’ in New York, ‘Smart Bar’ in Chicago, his own infamous ‘Fridays R Firin’ at Plastic People in London, ‘Café D’ Anvers’ in Belgium and currently Stompa Phunk in Brighton.
Kenny is probably as famous for his productions as he is his DJing with several classics under his belt that are a permanent fixture in many DJ box, such as ‘Ashley’s War’, ‘Sleaze Walking’, ‘Play the Game’ featuring Louise Carver and ‘Dance With Me’ featuring Marcel and Kimra, plus an array of remixes (please read his Discography which also includes the ‘Space’ compilation album on Slip N` Slide and the legendary ‘Nite:Life 017’ on NRK).
More recently Kenny has teamed up with David Parr (Stompa Phunk / Elite) to produce exclusive tracks for Rekids, Arcobaleno and 20:20 Vision. The pair are being touted as “one of the hottest new production partnerships around”, producing insanely catchy electronic house music that is deep and melodic, crossing the electro deep- and techhouse divides.

As fashions change and music evolves, Kenny has established himself as one of the most respected and consistently creative house DJs in the world. His sets always have an air of quality, flowing through different styles of music – modern soul - jackin’ house - minimal tech - Detroit techno – and mark him as a true house DJ with depth and soul.
EXTRACT FROM 365Mag.com SEPT 08:
Interview with Keith Reilly, owner of Fabric nightclub, London, talking about his inspiration for starting the Super Club:
“I remember very clearly telling Kenny Hawkes that I loved his club, Space at Bar Rhumba (pivotal London house mid-weeker circa 1995-2002), so much that I wanted to replicate its amazing underground vibe, but at weekends and for 2000 people! I'm glad you found out about that actually… I love Kenny Hawkes as a DJ, and loved Space as a night; that really deep, hypnotic style of house, with everyone in the groove, that was really amazing - and you couldn't get that at the weekend in London at the time, you
really couldn't. I've got the highest regard for Kenny, actually, he's someone I regard as having total integrity and real talent; a real unsung hero of the UK house scene, in fact.”

He’s been involved in projects like very successful ‘Brickbeat’, promoting underground parties around London’s Shoreditch.

Sandy’s love for music stems from clubbing in his home town of Pune, India. Being around like minded people fed his desire to grow in this industry. So like many DJ’s what started as a bedroom hobby grew into a fun job. He began playing at university parties and friends birthdays, which only amplified his need to make music his life. It was at this point that Sandy decided to leave the safety of university life to pursue DJ’ing full time.

By 2002 he had his first residency at a club called ‘The Elbow Room’, which later that year was listed as one of the best clubs in the country. After exhausting all avenues in and around his home town Sandy decided to move to Dubai in 2005.

He entered the Heinekin Thirst Competition in September 2005, and was selected as a finalist for the event. It didn’t take long for him to make a name for himself and Sandy’s versatility as a DJ led to him being offered a residency at Henry J. Bean’s, a local pub venue that gave him an opportunity to play every night and hone his mixing skills.

In 2006, Sandy was again selected as a finalist for the Heinekin Thirst Competition. Later that same year, he became the Store Manager at OHM Records, the only independent record store in the Middle East. As well as managing the store, he was also actively involved with the events department which put on some of the biggest and most famous dance events in the Middle East. By the end of 2006 Sandy was offered a bi-weekly residency at Enigma, which is the biggest club in Abu Dhabi, where he played along side the likes of Dave Seaman, James Lavelle, Alex Miles and Matty Wells (Smartie Partie).

By then a relative veteran of the Dubai DJ circuit, Sandy held residencies and guest spots at Dubai’s best nightclubs, such as Trilogy and Chi. He was also a regular feature at Warped, Dubai’s most famous techno night. From beach parties to yacht parties, main room to VIP rooms, he has been a part of nights such as Shindig, Cocoon and Global Underground, and supported the likes of M.A.N.D.Y., Scarlett Etienne, Adam Kroll and Aaron Ross, in and around Dubai.

This year is another big year for Sandy as his makes his move to Byron Bay, Australia, to become a full time student in the Bachelor of Audio Production (BAP) at the international headquarters of SAE. His quest to play the music he feels so passionately about continues…

Luke Solomon has been a fundamental part of the dance scene for over a decade now and his contribution over the years has been nothing short of phenomenal. Now in 2007, his sound is still evolving and his bizarre take on the new underground house sound is very exciting, a master of the groove and never afraid of a risk, his latest productions are arguably his finest work to date.

Luke began his professional DJ career in 1990 with a residency at Middlesex University, which is where he met cohort Justin Harris. After a spell working in a local record shop and as a part-time fishmonger he got a job at Freetown records, which led him to long lasting relationships with Rob Mello and Kenny Hawkes. Rob took Luke under his studio wing and taught him the ropes, together they went on to release for both Freetown and Prescription Underground – it was through Prescription that he got introduced to a certain Derrick L. Carter. A bond was immediately formed and through their passion for House music and crazy late nights they formed the legendary Classic Recordings.

Luke also formed a recording partnership with Justin Harris and are the masterminds behind their band Freaks and their own label Music For Freaks, 3 studio albums followed. This year Luke and the band enjoyed a top ten hit with the re-release of their classic 'The Creeps' through DATA. As well as that Luke has been working on his own solo productions and has recently released singles through Crosstown Rebels, Gallery, Icon, Cajual and of course Rekids with whom he will be releasing his solo album 'The Difference Engine' in January 2008. He also has a monthly residency at AKA called Little Creatures and Moxa Club in Mantova, Italy.

Luke Solomon's new album "The Difference Engine" is to be released by Rekids in January 2008
